My attempt to digitally paint a monk in a style reminiscent of Van Gogh. It's based on several photos I took in Thailand of a sculpture of a monk covered in gold leaf, and different backgrounds. There's no magic filter button to do this, I have to set up the ground work and then do all the brush strokes individually with a tablet. And I wish it were that simple.

I'm 13 and this is my second critique so sorry if it's bad.
I like this picture a lot. The lines used all fit together perfectly. The use of colour in the background is great. The white lines do show very well the light or however you call it. The dark lines do show the folds and shadows in a lot of detail. I like how you were able to use a good technique while still making sure the picture doesn't look like something completely different. This actually looks like it was painted by hand instead of digitally. I find it very impressive.
One small thing: I think the lines might need to blend a bit more together? They seem to be like in rectangles. I don't know if this is the way you wanted it so I was just pointing it out. Other than that, this picture is fantastic. Keep up the great work!
This is a really stunning peice of work you have here!! I adore your use of color in the background, it gives it a sort of 3-D feel . The tribute to Van Gogh is very clear as well!!! I am simply amazed that this is a digital peice, really well put together!Your composition is lovely and your eye for detail is simply astonishing!!
The only critique I have is that I wonder what it may have looked like with brighter colors.. but that may just be my aesthetic...Kudos!

I really like that comment "a tribute to paint". I used to paint, and I always wanted to do thick oils, but never got to it, mostly because that's just not where the scene was when I was in art school (though I did do a series of 12 very painterly 3X4' canvases). The computer allows me the imaginative freedom to paint without paint. It is ironic.
I agree. Thick paint is a bit of a luxury, unless one used really cheap paint, but then the work wouldn't be archival. Still, I sometimes think about doing stuff with poster paint or some other dirt cheap paint, then photographing it, then tweaking it out on the computer. Alas, I don't have the space or means to do that right now (nor the time).
